Emilia Palonen is a Senior Univeristy Lecturer in Political Science at the University of Helsinki, currently working as one of the Programme Director in Datafication at the Helsinki Institute for Social Sciences and Humanities and leading the HEPPsinki research hub on Emotions Populism and Polarisation (HEPP). Her background is in discourse theory (PhD and MA Essex) and Central and East European Studies (BA London), and she has an adjunct professorship in Cultural Policy at the University of Jyväskylä. Palonen has published widely on populism, nationalism and European urban-cultural-political connections, particularly in Hungary and Finland. She authors the Finland chapter at the Political Data Yearbook. Palonen holds leading roles in science communication with regular commentary in the press, and scholarly associations, being a member of the Executive Committee of International Political Science Association (IPSA), the board of the Finnish Federation of Learned Societies (TSV), and the Human Rights Commission of the Council of Finnish Academies.
